Ethics Policy

Conflict of Interest

A perceived conflict of interest is functionally identical to an actual conflict of interest. Both destroy credibility. We require absolute transparency regarding financial portfolios, political affiliations, and personal relationships.

Financial Disclosures

Journalists covering specific sectors (e.g., tech, finance, healthcare) must not hold individual stocks in companies they cover. Broad-based mutual funds and index funds are permissible, but must be disclosed if covering the financial industry broadly.

Political Activity

Reporters, editors, and publishers must refrain from:

  • Donating to political campaigns, PACs, or politically active non-profits.
  • Participating in partisan marches or rallies.
  • Displaying political yard signs or bumper stickers.

Disclosure Decision Matrix

Scenario Required Action
Spouse works for a company you are investigating. Recuse immediately. Do not touch the story.
You own shares in a broad index fund that includes a company you cover. No action required, assuming it's a standard diversified fund.
A source offers to pay for a working lunch. Decline. The publication pays for all expenses.
